Installation Hung

I am upgrading my Notes 9 client to the GA release and the installation appears to have hung.

It has been stuck on "Please wait a few minutes while the installation finishes" for over 30 minutes.

OS:                         Windows 7
Installation file:    DOMINO_DESI_ADM_9.0_32B_WIN_EN.exe

I took a look at the notes logs and don't see any obvious errors.

Regards,

Colin

For IBMers - some installs of 9.0 require an uninstall/clean/install of 9.0.  If your prior install of Notes came from ISSI/TAP, that may be your issue - refer to instructions on ISSI on how to address the issue

Try this.
There should be 4 (or more) copies of msiexec running on your machine if you run Task Manager.  Make sure you click "Show processes from all users".

Find the msiexec.exe process that is using the least memory and is running under your account and right click on it.  Select "End Process Tree".  This should allow the install to complete.  If it does not and instead causes the install to terminate then you'll need to run the Nice tool to remove the installation and then reinstall.

I can't attach files to this forum so I'll mail you the Nice utility.

Please send the file "My Documents\IBMNotesInstallerLog.cab" to me.

Thanks

~jeff

RE: Installation Hung

Update:

After a reboot to get rid of the hung installer, I tried again but soon after starting up the installer complains "Unable to find valid target platform" and ends.

Next by "ISSI instructions" I assumed you meant run the "Lotus Notes Client Removal Tool V2.0", which I did and it executed successfully.

However I am still getting the error "Unable to find valid target platform".  I have even removed (well, moved) my c:\notes folder and I'm still getting the error.

I also ran the nice.exe tool.  At first it would not do anything as it could not find a notes installation, but I ran it with the -wipe option, to clear the registry.  Didn't help though.

Any ideas please?  Do you want me to gather MSI logs?

Cheers,

Colin

RE: Installation Hung

Colin please post the contents of the rcplauncher.log...    it should be in >> C:\Program Files (x86)\IBM\Lotus\Notesold853\Data\workspace\logs

RE: Installation Hung

Sorry Larry, looks like the NICE tool removed that log file!  I do remember checking it it myself and didn't see any errors within it.

Hmm, did you select the "Remove data files" option?
Nice doesn't touch the Notes data directory even if the data directory is under the in single user mode by default.   Since you removed your C:\Notes directory you probably deleted your Notes data directory including the logs.

Can you look in your "My Documents" folder for a file named "IBMNotesInstallerLog.cab" and send it to me?

Thanks

RE: Installation Hung

Perhaps ISSI's Lotus Notes Client Removal Tool V2.0 removed it then, because I assure you my C:\notes\data\workspace directory has gone :(

(btw, I didn't delete c:\notes, I just renamed it in the hope that doing so fix the  "Unable to find valid target platform" error dialog)

I searched My Documents for IBMNotesInstallerLog.cab but nothing was found...

Colin

BTW I'm currently making backups in preparation to reinstall Windows 7.  If you need me to try anything before I do, ping me on Sametime tomorrow (I'm in Bluepages) and perhaps I can share my screen with you.

RE: Installation Hung

Final Update: I reinstalled Windows 7 and after doing so, had no problems installing Notes 9 GA.
