Lotus Notes 9.01 FP2 issue

  • Category: Install

  • Release: 9.0.1

Need your xpertise on the following issue.  Not sure any of you ran into issue with FP2 for LN 9.01.

I have a workstation running Windows 7 32bit.  After installing FP2, when I launch Notes I get

....errors occurring will cause Lotus Notes to not open and then say it ha encountered an error when trying to launch.

Uninstalling FP2 will allow Lotus Notes 9 to open correctly.

So far,  I have uninstalled and fresh installed the client.  Also installed under root of C:\ and installed under different Windows account but same issue.

Another part of the error message when trying to install FP2 is that Java is unable to create the virtual machine.  I also running latest java on this machine.

Do yall have any ideas on this?  Any help would be greatly appreciated..

Does FP2 install correctly?

Watch very carefully when installing FP2 - is it being installed correctly or does it fail? I suspect the latter. It isn't obvious that the install fails unless you watch the dialog boxes carefully.

We've had issues with the JVM part of the install failing - and the rollback doesn't complete properly - leaving FP2 partially installed - which sounds very similar to what you're seeing.

The only option is to remove FP2 by running the install a second time (as you've found).

We've had an open PMR, but ended up closing as unresolved, apparently the logs don't show where the failure is.

I've seen a couple other reports here of the problem but no solutions yet.

Please provide log for analysis
Please use startcollector.bat to collect the logs. The startcollector.bat is in the Notes RCP subdirectory of the Notes client framework directory, e.g. c:\Program Files\IBM\Notes\framework\rcp\ for Notes 9.x. For more details, please refer to http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21424260

In case
startcollector.bat failed to execute, please manually wrap up below logging folder/files?
  • The folder workspace/logs, workspace/applications, workspace/.metadata, workspace/.config
  • The folder <Program Files (x86)>\IBM\Notes\framework\rcp\deploy
  • The folder <Program Files (x86)>\IBM\Notes\framework\rcp\systemdata (if existed)
  • The file $user/Document/IBMNotesInstall.log, and $user/Document/IBMNotesInstallerLog.cab

Could you help to provide the install sequence?
Could you help to provide the install sequence?  It will help us to reproduce the issue.

901 -> FP2  or 901 -> exact Hotfix/Addon -> FP2?

To solve the issue...
...you must uninstall Notes completely using NICE tool and reinstall the client.

Not trying to steal Wongo Wongo's post, but....

For what it's worth - my scenario seems to have been the same, with the same (or at least similar) symptoms & error(s):

Install Notes 9.0.1, then install FP2, which failed, and failed during the rollback operation. Running Notes subsequently failed. Running the FP2 installer again did revert the client to 9.0.1, then Notes ran properly as 9.0.1. There was a previous version of Notes installed on this machine, but I'm not sure exactly which version. Notes 9.0.1 was not installed over the top, but the previous version was removed, and Notes 9.0.1 was installed using the 'new' directory structure - so it was a 'clean' install to a 'clean' directory.

Using the NICE tool to 'completely' remove Notes and the registry entries did not work for us, either. Clearing the directory structure after running NICE didn't help, either.

Since we only had one user that was affected, we ended up giving the user a new machine. I'm still trying to get my hands on the old machine (it's in a remote location) so that I can do some further tests.

I say that we only had one affected user, but I've received anecdotal evidence that we've had more that one issue, it's just that the tech(s) involved at the time(s) left the machine with 9.0.1 with no fixpacks and didn't pursue the issue. So we may see it pop up again.

If I can get my hands on the affected machine - where would you like logs sent?

Thanks!

--------------------

Update - I have the test machine - I can reproduce the FP2 install error that I am receiving - where would you like me to post the logs? (Approx 4Meg)

On their way!

The files are on their way.

I've included files from each step of the process - when the first failure dialog box appears, when the second box appears, and again after the FP2 uninstall is run.

I'm also including files found in the JVM directory: heapdump.xxx.phd, javacore.xxx.txt and snap.xxx.trc

Thanks for looking into this!

New development...

I also found that FP1 install fails as well - same symptoms...

Started searching the forum again, found a reference to a file named 'jvmpatcher.log' - so, I started the  FP2 install again, as soon as the install fails - I opened the 'jvmpatcher.log ' - there are no error messages, but there is no completion message, either.

The last two lines of the jvmpatcher.log  are:

  Patching file: lib\sound.properties
  Zip patching file: lib\tools.jar

When I look in the 'Program Files\IBM\Notes\jvm\lib' directory, I find a 0 byte 'tools.jar' file with today's date. It appears this is where the FP2 install is bombing out.

When I compare this directory with the 'Program Files\IBM\Notes\jvm\lib' directory on my machine, I have 46 items, the failing machine has 38.

In case it helps.

Mark, Thanks for the info. on this. Glad I am not only one running into this issue.

We ended up having admin. reimage or get a new machine all together.  I'm curious to see what the fix would be on this issue.

No problem...

You're not the only one - we've apparently seen it on a couple machines, and I've found another handful of posts here with users having the same issues that have gone unresolved. Unfortunately, the Search function in this forum doesn't work anything like a real search, so it's difficult to locate similar issues.

I've actually also found a couple technotes that appear very similar - but don't appear to be identical - but they don't contain any fix information just documenting the issue, I guess.

Some days I think that I'm too persistent, but on the other hand I guess I have high hopes that someone will fix the issue before FP3 comes out!

;-)

Found a second machine with exactly the same issue!

We just ran into another machine today where we're running into the same issue. It's also a Windows 7 32-bit machine.

8.5.3 (no FP) was installed previously on this machine, it appears that 8.5.3 was installed as Single User.

8.5.3 was removed, the Lotus/Notes/Data directory deleted. 9.0.1 was then installed into the new directory structure with no issue, but FP2 will not install - we receive the same error.

Although I've heard grumblings in the past about this issue here, this is the second case that's been documented and escalated to me. Both have had Notes 8.5.x installed previously.

Wongo Wongo - on the machine(s) where you've seen this - was a previous version of Notes installed?

Thanks!

Mark, there was no previous client installed on the one I had.

What little we think we know...

So far, it seems that the only commonality is that it seems to always be a Windows 7 32 bit machine that's involved. In a couple of our cases, it seems that Notes 8.5.3 was previously installed. But we've had other Win 7 32 bit machines that have had Notes 8.5.3 installed that have had no issue. Also, Wongo Wongo stated that when it happened to him, there was no previous client installed - it was a fresh install of 9.0.1 then FP2 that failed.

We typically install the notes client as a Single user, and we also install Single Logon feature to sync the Notes password with the Windows password.  The client is installed by an Admin user, the end user usually has more limited access.  Every instance of the FP install failure, however, has been when the client and FP was being installed by the Admin user.

We've run the NICE utility - it does not help. At least on the machines that we've been able to test with we can see that the error is reproducable - one one machine we've tested with we've probably tried to install over 20 times now. So if there's something I can look for - or a specific test we can try let me know.

Once thing we have not done is t copy a known good user's JVM directory over to the failing machine prior to the install - I've heard that is a workaround, but I don't want to cause our test machine to stop failing in case we can actually locate the problem.

Same thing here 901 FP2 or FP3 - Java error

This just happened today for us.

I installed 9.0.1 and then FP2.  FP2 failed so we installed it again and it was removed and Notes worked.  We just tried FP3 and there were 2 popup messages:

1.  "The launcher failed with an error. Refer to c:\Program Files\IBM\Notes\Data\workspace\logs\rcplauncher.log for more information."  (OK button)

2.  "Could not create the Java Virtual Machine"  (OK button)

We re-ran FP3 again and it uninstalled OK and Notes was able to work again still sitting at 9.0.1

Windows 7 32 bit?

Quin - is your machine also Windows 7 32 bit?

Did it happen to have a previous version of Notes or is this a clean install?

We've had at least 3 machines with exactly the issue that you describe, we're unable to install FP1, FP2 or FP3.

My PMR with IBM is basically going nowhere. I realize that it's difficult (for IBM) to reproduce, but it sure is frustrating for us.

These are the SPRs noted in my PMR:

 - These messages are a precise match to spr YGAO98ZMEW but this was closed as not reproducible.

 - The rcplauncher log file contents is a match to spr ORN9JFGAZ but also was closed as not reproduible.

 - This issue is now documented in an additional defect report:
     SHEZ9P3KAP, LO82001
     KTOT9K3RXW, LO80392

Thanks!

Yep Windows 7 32-bit

Yes.  Microsoft Windows 7 32bit.   First we tried to upgrade.  Didn't work.  Then we uninstalled and ran NICE, removed every directory and rebooted.  Many registry entries were still there as well as the user\app data\local\IBM folder which we also removed.  Doesn't look like NICE is removing everything.  At this time, I tried a brand new install.

IBM Notes 9.0.1 installed just fine but none of the Fix packs will take.  This user has Java 8.x installed on his machine and I'm wondering if I should remove that as well and test it again.  I have Java version 7.x and I'm on 9.0.1FP3 (64bit).

All of the installs are being performed locally (not from a network share).

Not roaming users, single user install, not designer or admin.

I guess I will have to open a PMR as well when the user gets back in the office in 2 weeks.  In the meantime, I will have him uninstall Java, reboot and try installing FP3 to see if that helps.

Did you have Java installed?

We do, but...

We do have Java installed, I kinda dismissed Java because Notes has it's own JVM. We have various versions of Java installed, typically including 5.0.9 for one specific application that we have to support, and usually various newer versions as well, depending on the needs of other users.

I did not try to uninstall Java because 1) I honestly didn't think it was involved, and 2) it appears that Windows 7 32 bit seems to be the common denominator. Nowehere in any of the other reports that I've seen of the issue, nor the support site, nor during the PMR has it been indicated that removing Java might affect the issue and/or be a workaround - so I guess I just never took the time to try it. I guess that it would be interesting to know.

Otherwise, the issue seems to match mine down to a 'T'.

Removed Java - Same issue

Yeah, just as you thought, Java removed, rebooted and reinstalled Notes.  It has no bearing on this issue, but at least that is ruled out as well.

Remove all and install again worked

Completely uninstalling Notes and installing again 9.0.1, then FP3 without setting up Notes worked.

Been there, done that, doesn't work

As I said in a previous post, we uninstalled everything related to IBM and ran the NICE tool and rebooted.

Deleted every folder related to IBM and reinstalled 901 and that worked, installed FP3 and that doesn't.  You can install FP3 again and that removes FP3 and you can then run Notes, but not with FP3.

...Update...

Last week I received a hotfix from support - FP3 with updated installer code, and I was able to install it on two Win7 32bit machines where we were previously unable to install FP1, FP2 or FP3.

We also installed it on a Win7 64bit machine with no ill effects.

The spr for my PMR is KTOT9K3RXW, LO80392.

Question to Mark Taylor

Hello, Mark!

I've got the sane issue with FP3 installation on W7.

Could you tell me please where I can get this FP3 with updated installer code?

Open a PMR with IBM...

and you can reference the SPR from my previous post. What I received was 901FP3SHF120_W32_standard.exe.

One cavet that i'd mention is that once this FP installer is run, it reports in as FP3SHF120, which means that to install FP4, for example, you'd have to uninstall this version to install FP4. So we've decided to use it only when necessary so that we don't have to fight it down the road.

I was told that the current FP3 would be/could be/might be re-released with the updated code, but I suspect it has not.

Hopefully FP4 will include the updated installer code.

Same issue

Hi,

We have the same issue on several computers, some in French, some in Spanish and some in English, on 8.5.3 upgrades but also on fresh images.

I found it only on windows 7 32 bits machines, installing FP1 FP2 or FP3

To share other information that may impact the case,
We install the notes client as a Single user, and we also install Single Logon feature to sync the Notes password with the Windows password.

We have Dell computers only and Symantec Endpoint.

Not really happy to have to wait 1 Year (since 9.0.1), for a FP4 before being able to update notes !
Really hope it will solve this issue.

Hey Guys...I've downloaded 9.0.1 FP3 IF3 the file

name is 901FP3SHF227_W32_standard.exe and applied to 9.01 client with FP1 and it's still failing.

First error box is <The launcher failed with an error.  blah blah.... >

Second error box is <Could not create the Java virtual machine>

We will completely uninstall Notes again  and install fresh along with this downloaded fixpack and see what happens.

Here is common info. that everyone can agree on.  This error appears to be happening with

Windows 7 Professional

Standard configuration

Fixed by copying notes.exe from working machine

I fixed the issue by copying the notes.exe file from a computer with a working notes installation.

Took about 2 minutes.

Technically not supposed to be done but it worked.

If your notes is not working check the notes folder. If the icon is not displaying then use my fix.

Example below.
