Multiple internet email addresses on one Domino server

Where I work, our current email system is web based email using Outlook but I have been running Domino with Notes on my own for a small group of us for the past 3 years.  My boss is now seriously considering abandoning this web based email in favor of Domino/Notes but the primary email has an established domain separate from the domain Domino resides on.  One problem is the internet domain Domino resides on is what our domain controller sits on and what supplies our internet connectivity.  He wants to maintain the new domain name due to all of our customers being familiar with and knowing the email addresses associated with it.  I need to incorporate this new internet domain onto our Domino server and I understand that this can be done by creating a Global Domain document.  There are a some questions regarding this procedure...  1)  In the Global Domain document, would I set this other internet domain as the primary email domain with the Domino internet domain as the secondary?  2)  It will be a requirement I'm sure that the default email account will be this other internet domain.  Is this done by creating an additional location document?  3)  Will the network clients be able to receive email from both email accounts?  4)  In order for the world to find the existing mail server as this new internet domain, it will need to be registered with DNS via our ISP.  Other than having the proper MX record created, how do you incorporate a new DNS record onto the WIndows 2008R2 server?

We did something similar several years ago. You can just need to add whatever domains you wish Domino to accept mail from in the "Conversions" tab in the Mail Domain document. ( old.company.com, new.comp.com,  etc). Then define where you wish to relay email that does not belong to that server.

Hope this helps.

Hi Ron,

I understand what you are stating, all except for the last sentence... "define where you wish to relay email that does not belong to that server".  All the email from both domains will be available for the company.  I have never done anything like this and will be interesting to see it work....  Would have been easiest had they just went along with what I was proposing with the Domino server but everyone there was stuck on hotmail, yahoo and erghhh.... aol and left it up to me to hash out the disparaging results...

Additional info - Multiple internet email addresses on one Domino server

Hi Jon,

Basically we changed our setup so that all email arrive and are sent from our Domino server to / from the Internet. Any email addresses that didn't reside in Domino would be forwarded to Outlook / Exchange. Users on Outlook / Exchange would recieve their email from Domino and all email that they sent would be directed to Domino for delivery. This worked for us while we moved from Exchange to Domino.

It meant that the users temporarily had two email addresses (old on Exchange and new on Domno). When we got rid of Exchange we allowed both email addresses in Domino. That way the suppliers etc did not have to change email addresses. It was transparent to them.

In your reply ---- "When we got rid of Exchange we allowed both email addresses in Domino. That way the suppliers etc did not have to change email addresses. It was transparent to them."  This is precisely what I need to accomplish except there won't be a grace period of transferring from one to another... This isn't under my control so when the decision is made to switch, it will be within the amount of time it takes the internet to propagate the change in MX & A records... 24 hours so I need to make sure email will flow into Domino from the other domain uninterrupted and outgoing mail through Domino will still have the reply to address of the former webmail domain...

1) on the restrictions tab of the document, i have the Domino domain entered as the primary internet domain and the new webmail domain entered as the alternate internet domain alias.  Internet address lookup is enabled.  **I'm assuming by setting the internet address lookup to yes, the internet address in each person document will need to have both addresses.  If all this is correct, I don't see yet how any outgoing email will have the reply to address defaulted to the new webmail user@new_domain.com.  Make sense?

You are corrrect. If you specify both addresses in the Person document in the "User name" field then any email coming in that matches those addresses will be received in that person mail box.

Thanks Ron,

I won't have a chance to try it... wheels at the administration level sometimes move rather slowly.  I did create an additional location with the new email address and yes, works somewhat like Outlook when you have multiple addresses so that part of it is good.
