Domino Server Access is Slow at Intervals (at a Remote Location)

Hi,

We've moved our domino servers offsite to a hosted environment, which admittedly, we'd expect to be slower.  After all, it's a suburb away and on a slower (20mbps) connection, where it used to be in the next room on a gigabit connection.  The problem that we're facing isn't general operating speed, which is fine but regular "first access" speed.

For example, the first time we go into our mail, it's very slow to open but then it speeds up after a minute or two. The same applies to first accesses of any database.  If we leave things for a while, perhaps spend 30 minutes away from our mail, then the next time we click on an open mail tab, it takes a couple of minutes again.

We have files hosted on a server at the same location and even the big files don't have this delay.

The server isn't busy, so it's not a slow-down that you get when agents are running.

I'm thinking it's something to do with views, caching and refreshing but would be interested in any other opinions.  Has anyone else seen this kind of behaviour?

Thanks.

Gavin.

Collecting some debug might help
Since we are not sure on what is causing the issue yet I would suggest to enable the following on a couple of Notes client machines

Console_log_enabled=1
CONSOLE_LOG_MAX_KBYTES=512000
   (you can set this to whatever value you want to ensure that it is large enough so that the log does not rollover)
LOGSTATUSBAR=1

Client_clock=30

client_clock_server_format=1

debug_threadid=1

Client clock 30 will give you the time for all trasnactions and the call stack of every transaction so you should be able to see where the slow down is happening.  It is important to collect the info from more than just one user client so that we can see if the issue is always related to the same type of transaction.
