Notes 9.0.1 frequent crashes caused by embedded Sametime client

  • Category: Notes Client
  • Platform: Windows
  • Release: 9.0.1
  • Role: Administrator

Since I updated myAdmin & Designer client from 8.5.3 to 9.0.1 I have multiple crashes per day.

They are obviously caused by the embeded sametime clients as they happen when I initiate a chat, I have an open chat window and press return on my written text, somebody starts a chat with me.

The client crashes, the nsd information comes up and after a few seconds the client restarts and presents the login window.

I tried almost everything already: removing and adding back my sametime communities. uninstalling and installing the sametime component, uninstalling and reinstalling the client (even with removing everything left manually and cleaning the registry). After that last reinstall all worked fine for one and a half day and now it starts again!

See log entries below, imho they indicate a java memory problem. But I had no problems with 8.5.3 before on that machine and several of my colleagues have 9.0.1 installed on the same type of machine with no problems!

Console log shows this:

I think I remember that...

And I could be very wrong here, but I think I remember reading somewhere that IBM was recommending that you not upgrade a previous install of the Notes standard client from 8.5.x to 9.x.  That instead, due to the number of changes in the eclipse components, that you do a fresh install of the client.  Also what version of the embedded Sametime client are you using?  Was the install customized to use a 9.x embedded Sametime client or is it still using the 8.5.x embedded Sametime client?

Clean install

I tried both ... upgrading and a fresh install (even cleaning the registry). Didn't help.

No customization - installed as delivered (as far as I know the 9.01 client is delivered with ST 8.52 client)

We now have a second of our testers running into the same issue .. that's now 2 out 10!

Me too !!!

I am in the same boat as you. I upgraded the embedded Sametime with the latest from IBM Fix Central (20140221) and it still crashes or renders Notes "unusable" (cannot display emails with MIME, window graphic does not refresh, etc...).

I have totally uninstalled everything, wipe out clean with NICE. Still, same issues.

Suggestions to investigate further.

When you see "OSWCTPanicShutdown" it means that the issue is in the Eclipse part of the Notes client. The NSD is unlikely to help.

In the "workspace\logs" folder, check the error log and search for SEVERE (or language version of the word if not an English client). This should give you a more detailed error and a stack trace to work with.

Find and replace the following in the file so the stack becomes more readable.

The first SEVERE is normally the culprit, but if you have a number of WARNING before it, it may also be related.

If your investigation already points to Sametime, you can add the following debug to get more detailed traces of what is going on. Review what is outputted before posting though to ensure there is nothing confidential to your environment.

I have 2 PMRs on this right now

One "type" of crash is related to Sametime and another one is related to opening MIME email
