Domino Designer dead after Windows crashed

  • Category: Domino Designer

My laptop crashed and after I got it back, I can not open any of my LN database/application in Designer mode (I have both Designer and Admin). I re-installed Domino (with both Designer and Admin) using a clean installation. Once done, I rebooted my laptop, still I can not open in Desginer mode. I killed Notes client, tried to open Designer by clicking on its icon on desktop. It asked for password but then hung up. Open Domino client then try to open in Designer an application/database and got this error "An error was encountered while opening a Window".  ZAP it again then kill all Notes processes in Taks Manager but still Designer can not be opened.

Please help. What do I need to do ? Many thanks in advance.

Try recreating your workspace

Hung,

Rename your workspace (e.g. c:\ibm\notes\data\workspace), make sure all Notes processes are terminated (you can run nsd -kill for this) and then restart and see if that allows Designer to run normally. You'll lose some customizations by doing this, but it might get you past this issue.

Domino Designer dead after Windows crashed

Hi Chad,

Did exactly what you suggested : kill Notes, Zap it then checked out Task Manager to make sure no Notes processes existed. Renamed c:\notes\data\workspace in c:\notes\data\workspace_old, restarted Notes. Again, Designer won't work.

Many thanks for your kind reply. Anymore suggestion ?

RE: Domino Designer dead after Windows crashed
Based on your description, I'd be more suspect of something going on with your Windows user profile or the underlying OS. It sounds to me like it's still not really recovered. Especially since you've already done a new, clean install of Notes- that's probably a dead-end. I know you'll hate hearing this, but your best bet may be a factory reinstall of the laptop from the recovery DVD/CDs or partition, after backing up all your data of course. I suspect that then, Notes/Domino will fall right into place.

Try this

Are you able to work with databases the databases in Notes? This is a pretty general procedure, but you can give it a shot:

  1. Ensure no Notes processes are running
  2. Open a command prompt and navigate to your data directory (e.g. c:\ibm\notes\data)
  3. Run ..\nfixup (provide your password if prompted)
  4. Run ..\ncompact -c (provide your password if prompted)
  5. Start Notes and try to launch Designer

Step 4 may take some time if you have any large databases local to your system. If it's still not working, look in notes.ini for EXTMGR_ADDINS or NSF_HOOKS and comment them out, then restart.

I've same problem, but success when do in the Admin

Hi Hung,

based on your description, you can't open in Designer mode for your application:

"...I can not open any of my LN database/application in Designer mode (I have both Designer and Admin)..."

I'm also ever facing with this problem. Please try with:

1. Login by Administrator

2. On Domino Administrator, Change your privilege with Full Administrator

3. Choose Open in Designer for  you application in Domino Administrator.

Thanks

Found solution

Hi,

My thanks to all kind responses to my problem. What I did to fix it is :

  1. Delete all files under my C:\notes except the Data directory
  2. Delete all the Domino icons on my machine
  3. Re-install all with the option to remove it first.

That is the only way to restore my Designer. I had tried item #3 w/o removing/deleting all files under C:\notes directory and that did not fix the problem. I also tried to delete all statement in the notes.ini file except the first 4 lines, but also to no avail.

It just happened to me again, today. My OS just froze, so I used the Windows Task Manager to kill applications that were "Not Responding" then rebooted it because response was really slow. Again, after I got LN up, my Designer was not responsive. It is a time consuming restoration and it only happens to me, twice,  since I switched to R9 few weeks ago. I never had this problem under R8.3 . So, I strongly believe this is a bug on this R9.
