column sorting not being remembered when user switches folders

I've got a user who is reporting that the column sorting is not 'sticking'.  If they sort a column in one folder by recipient, say, if they click out of the folder and then return to it, it's not sorted by recipient anymore.  He says the default sort order is descending by date and it returns to that.  Might there be a setting somewhere which controls this?

thanks

Mail Preferences

Under File/Preferences/Mail, there is a setting you can choose that sets your default to either Ascending or Descending order, by date.  If you de-select that option, the Option you choose manually should remain.

I agree with Bradley for setting suggested.  To get it work the mail file must be re-opened.
