Upgrade of several servers, templates replication

Hi there,

I am planning to upgrade several servers in the same /O from 7 to 9. Of course I won't be able to upgrade them all at once and there may be a couple of days between each server upgrade. I am concerned that in the meantime, the standard templates are going to replicate.

1) What would be the adverse effects of having a R7 server running with R9 templates for system databases such as names.nsf, admin4.nsf and the like ?

2) How would one prevent the replication of the templates, and only the templates ?

Thanks

RTFM First
There are tons of articles on how to upgrade Domino Servers, the basics have not changed since a lot of domino generations. This question is answwered in almost any such article that I have ever seen.

Basically, names has to be upgraded as soon as the first server is installed, it is not guaranteed to work correctly, if any server has a names. nsf, whoms version is not in par with the servers version.

To avoid automatic upgrade of other databases, remove the designer task from notes.ini

To avoid replication of templates, change the connection documents to exclude *.ntf

Should work just fine...
For System Databases, down level servers running a more recent design will work just fine... If you find otherwise, it's a bug and should be reported to IBM Support...

Always Best Practive to have all servers at most recent release with system databases with most recent designs, but we certainly need to support interoperability with down level servers as upgrading them all at once cannot be expected and many servers can't be upgraded until all products currently being utilized on any given server ship a certified version for the release being upgraded to.

Why most critical server first?

I've always found it strange that the recommended best practice is always to upgrade your directory server first.  On companies that started out with one server this tends to be their most critical.  So, most companies, (mine included) upgrade some 'expendable' server first.  Test their applications out there, test replication and clustering, etc.  Also helps when you've RTFM but skipped a step, like ensuring your Java level was compatible with the newer Domino.  Which I believe to be the #1 killer of which versions of IBM i support which versions of Domino.
