Install Notes 9 ALONGSIDE Notes 8?

Hi guys,

I have a copy of the Notes 9 client from passport advantage. (CIB8LEN)

I want to install it so that I can start testing some features etc, however I need to still be able to use my 8.5.3 client as this is the company standard and I need to test my applications with it, obviously to make sure they work.

I have tried running the Notes 9 installer but get the error "Cannot upgrade AllClient installation to notes Client. The upgrade you are attempting is not suported"

I assume this is because I have the 8.5.3 all client installed (Client, Designer & Administrator)

Is there anyway I can install Notes 9 as a separate install, rather than an upgrade, so that I can continue to use my 8.5.3 client when needed?

If I install the full suite (CIB9AEN) will this also upgrade my current 8.5.3 setup or can I again, have then running separate from each other?

Thanks

Yes you can

It's completely possible to install multiple versions of Notes on the same machine. I have 7 and 9 on my main workstation.

At the very least, you absolutely need to have separate directories for the binaries, and for the data, something along the lines of

c:\program files\ibm\notes8\... and c:\data\notes8 on one hand and

c:\program files\ibm\notes9\... and c:\data\notes9 on the other hand.

Then the tricky part is sometimes with the Windows registry. It seems that the installer first checks the registry and when it sees the existing installation, treats the new install as an upgrade. You can first weed out the registry of everything Notes related. Notes does not really need those. It's a bit tedious, but it works.

Another approach is to treat the new install as a *portable* installation, making it independant of the existing installation and of the registry. Does not need to be on an actual flash drive, but as above make sure to use independant and watertight sets of directories.

A quick googling yields those two results :

Using a method similar to the second one, I was once even able to install a second  version in userland (%userprofile/mynotes/...). This, of course, depends on the policies enforced by your corporate IT. Depending if said corporate IT is cooperative or not, you may want to talk to them : they may have tools to help you tweak the registry and around Windows permissions.

Not support to install multiple version of Notes on one machine
It is not support, because there are many conflicted entries in Windows OS registry, especially for Notes 8.0+.

I would recommend you to get another machines.  Or, to leverage some 3rd party Application Virtualization tool, e.g. VMWare Thin-App.

Possible, not supported, and a bit tricky
Of course you can, nothing is impossible. Googling about the topic will bring you a handful of descriptions how to do it. Even if it is not supported by IBM, they have documented it nevertheless somewhere on Developer Works. You have to be careful, which one you install as the last one, as this becomes your default installation and is the one, that is entered into the registry.

But basically, a parallel installation is no longer necessary for years now: Use a virtual machine (or several of them) for your additional or test installations.

Installation Fails

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the tip's, I've tried installing to usb using the following command

C:\Users\chris.richards\Desktop\Mo>setup /a /v"NOMAD=1 TARGETDIR=F:\ /qb+"

Everything runs fine for a while, however I then get the error:

"Error 1304.Error writing to file F:\program files\IBM\Notes\nnet.dll. Verify that you have access to that directory"

The USB has been formatted, so not sure what that could mean?

Looking at the USB it has created file paths and files, but when I click cancel to the above message, it obviously removes these files and the installation cancels.

Any idea's?

Thanks

Ignore

Ignore that bit, Ive worked out I had the USB formatted as FAT, so re-formatted as NTFS and the install has completed successfully

However, when running autorun.exe I get the error:

"Failed to update Notes.ini (Directory=):The system cannot find the path specified. (3)"

AND

"Failed to update Notes.ini (NOTES_TEMPDIR=):The system cannot find the path specified. (3)"

Followed by:

Failed to launch Lotus Notes on USB: The directory name is invalid. (267)

Any idea's? Google isnt throwing much up.

Thanks
