I use this Forum database replicated on my Notes 8 test machine.

I am using Beta 3 mow but it was also happening in Beta 2.

I just replicate for the first time today, and, the new topics already came in as READ, responses are UNREAD.

Sometimes I have READ responses with Topics that are UNREAD.

Anyhow I am sure that I have not opened the document, neither opened in Preview pane.

I marked ALL READ just before installing Beta 3 to separate a bit the Beta 2 stuff, they remain marked as READ.

Just that some ghost must be reading entries for me ...

P.S.: I don't know if this would happen using a 7.0.2 client, but I am only using it with Notes 8 beta at the moment..
P.S.: I did a fixup -F, compact -i -c -D, updall -R, updall -X on the database yesterday, and the starnge unread mark behavior continues.
Note that using this beta client I do not have this problem with e-mail databases, not on 8 on 6.5.5 neither on 5.0.13 databases.
