In our world, we have certain functions (such as wires, loan rate locks, etc) which have cutoff times each day. If there is a glitch internally that holds up mail routing for even a few minutes, that will affect the cutoff and processing. So, we need to know when the message was posted/sent, not when it made it into the mail file.

Probably the only way to appease everyone is, as was mentioned, display both. I will politely disagree that it will eat up too much screen real estate to do this - there is a lot of whitespace above and to the left of the currently displayed date/time in the message header.
