Jim has it backwards...

- You must load notes.exe to get the "Standard" client. The "Basic" client is nlnotes.exe. I don't know why Lotus did this, but I know I'm right, because nlnotes is how one runs multiple instances of the client in parallel, and R8.5 will not run in that manner and allow Designer to load. One must use notes.exe, which utterly and completely hoses any other instance of any other Notes client of any version that may be running. The "workaround" is to waste a hideous amount of system resources to instantiate a separate virtual machine for each instance of R8.5 one wishes to use simultaneously.

- So run notes.exe and you should be golden, if you haven't tried that already...
