The instructions about installing the certificate into the CACERTS applies. You will also need to install any root/chain related to the certificate so it can be authenticated.

The sample java code will allow you to debug the SSL if it's still failing.

For R9, Java reads the Names.nsf certificates instead of the CACerts. More details here:
