The software takes 956kb on your system (c:) on the phone - you can't change that location.
Data is then dependant on whether you synch Mail, Calendar, To-Do, Contacts and Journal, and how much info you choose to synch.
These all synch with the default applications on the device, therefore storage is set within the individual application preferences.
I synch my calendar, to-do's, notes and contracts using the default, But for mail I only synch my inbox (personal choice).
I've had my N97 since the launch back in July - and Traveler was installed on it while I was still in the shop. Been running on beta code since then and on gold release since Monday. Was running a Nokia E61/N95 before the N97 with the same success.
Haven't had any problems with Traveler (neither has my wife with her iPhone) - it just WORKS!
Just watch out though, running Traveler + Music + GPS + Maps + Fring (Twitter client) + Web-Browser + reading Mail - all at the same time - will sometimes crash the phone <grin>. Looking forward to the N97 Firmware 20 that will be available later this month (October) to increase the memory so I can do everything at once.
DATA - I'm on a 150mb Internet plan with Traveler synching constantly, I haven't exceeded 20% of my allowance in 4 months. Traveler, just like BB only sends the first 2k of any message - you can then choose whether to retrieve the rest as required. I'm a fairly average mail user, ~50-75 messages a day, plus I heavily use my calendar and to-do's.
BATTERY - Only once have I had to charge up during the day, and that was after 5 hours of phone calls. Generally I can last 2 days without needing to charge.
Summary - in addition to the E61/N95 I was also running a Blackberry for a couple of months. My PERSONAL opinion after using the N97 + Traveler is that I prefer the N97 and would recommend it over a Blackberry.
