A refresh would be needed for documents that were saved before you added the 'purpose' field, but should not be necessary for documents (new or old) that were saved after you added it. Seems to me that I have done this without any problem.

Make sure your 'purpose' field is defined as 'computed'. Also, make sure that the 'purpose' field is located below the field it is abstracting on the form. If those are correct, post the formula in your 'refresh' button and your 'purpose' field.
