... where exactly are you performing the typeahead from in the help db? I just tried it again from the Contents, Index, Search and Tips pages on the navigation pane (left hand side pane) since typeahead does not work from the content pane (right hand side pane). I've also contacted the help team to see if they've seen this issue but any further info you can provide will help narrow this down.

Also, I've forwarded the 2nd issue you mentioned with the db not opening in Designer to the appropriate team for a response.
