Failure to open Excel and Word attachments

Using Windows 7, IE9, Excel/Word 2007. Failure to open attachments in Lotus Notes. Error message: "There was a problem sending command to a program." Outside of Lotus Notes the files open with no problem. Found some suggested work arounds in other forums/tech sites but nothing works. Is there a fix?
