I tried many things to get this working again, including cutting down my mail file as people on Exchange forums suggested. finally got it to work by setting up SSL on the mail server. Is good practice any way but I hadn't got round it to.
So sync is only working when SSL is enabled. Turning it off results in the dreaded Unable to get Mail error. This is confusing as other people on this post say it's working for them without SSL. doesn't for me!
