What are the properties of that certificate?

Notes/Domino 8.5.3 doesn't support the SHA-2 hashing algorithms, so if the new cert uses SHA-2, you'll have problems attempting to use it in your client.

SHA-2 support is under serious consideration for inclusion in a future release of Notes/Domino. Some SPRs to keep your eye on:
