... i thought of that ...

But instead of messing with the actual files, last night I uninstalled & then reinstalled 8.5.3FP6 - and it looked as if that file was part of the package (if you read the messages really quick). I can confirm by looking at the timestamp, that file was replaced last night.

I can also confirm that the file appears to be identical to the file on non-failing machines (file size, security, Details, etc) and that the 'Microsoft.VC80.CRT.manifest' is identical (dated 2009) on both the 'failing' and non-failing machine.

ah HAAA! Line 4 of the manifest references a file 'msvcr80.dll'.

let me do some more poking around...

Thanks, BTW!

-------------

Later, comma, that same day...

Machine that is working contains a folder:

C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft.vc80.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.6195_none_88e41e092fab0294

05/01/2014 07:17 PM 802,640 msvcr80.dll
1 File(s) 802,640 bytes

Failing machine does not. Since the '6195' is explicitly listed in the manifest (line 4), this might be the difference.

Now that I have something more meaningful to search for, it seems that perhaps a 'Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package' isn't installed...
