Thank you. I have already found how to put a shortcut to the program. As you say, that is easy.
However both the GMail and HTC mail and calendar applications (on my HTC Desire) have home screen widgets as well as shortcuts to the programs.
The difference is that a widget shows you some data. A calendar widget usually this shows a list of today's appointments. For mail, how many unread messages + the most recent two or three.
Think of the Today themes on a Blackberry, or the way that a Nokia shows calendar, inbox, etc (if you are familiar with either of those).
One big advantage of Android over iOS is the ability to have home screen widgets which display live data, not just the app shortcuts Apple limits you to. Traveler needs widgets.
