You can use them keeping in mind the one limitation that you have already mentioned.

The limitation being (obviously) that you can't reference fields in a h/w formula on a page, since a page can have no fields. You can, however, access notes.ini variables or field values from documents (using @GetDocField) or from profile documents (using @GetProfileField) to obtain a similar effect.
