I need to upgrade an organisation's existing Lotus Domino from Version 5.x on Windows Server 2003 OS (32-bit) to Lotus Domino 8.5 on Windows Server 2008 (32bit)

Please what is the best upgrade strategy.
1-Should i perform an in-place upgrade, by first installing Lotus Domino 5 on the new hardware then restore the data(server id, notes.ini and mailbox databases) from existing server to the new server, then upgrade to Domino 6.5 and then upgrade to Domino 8.5
or
2-Install Lotus Domino 8.5 on the new server then restore the data (server id, notes.ini and mailbox databases) from existing server to the new server, then upgrade to the mailbox databases to Domino 8.5 template.
