Any debugging suggestions

I'm more than willing to try a few things if anyone has suggestions or places I can turn to figure out what's missing and/or dysfunctional (besides me).

My next attempt will be to create a chroot'd install of 32-bit 8.04 (Hardy) and see what happens.
