I agree with Peter,

The option -u on convert command should be used on this matter.

Some advise on that:
On this command use, it will take more time on each user.
You could minimize the impact on support problems separating the user that will be migrated on groups ( using a text file ), so you could schedule the conversion only for this groups.

The Help Desk support and probably you will be happy about the controlled impact of the specific users too.
