My solution

Ah-ha! Very good, that's the sort of thing I was looking for. But I ended up using grep -a directly on the nsf file. (One's brainwaves always arrive after posting to a forum)

"Judging the amount of Data (=Network load?) by interpreting text only sounds strange"

I get emailed reports from the various backup systems telling me which server, how many files and how much data has been backed up and different servers have different peaks depending on where we are in the academic year. I want to consolidate all the servers into the corporate backup system and the email reports are a nice source of data about the capacity I'm going to need.
