To debug DNSRBL...
~Umberto Nongeroson 17.Dec.02 09:16 AM a Web browser
Domino Server 6.0 Linux - RedHat

  1. Set up your domino host to use the spamhaus block list - sbl.spamhaus.org. You MUST set it up to log and reject (not log and tag or log only).
  2. Send a test message to nelson-sbl-test@crynwr.com.

NB - This message must be delivered to crynmr.com by the host you are testing (a) !

This will then cause a host (b) over at crynmr.com to attempt to deliver a message to your host (a). Host (b) is listed in the sbl and if your host (a) is correctly blocking using the sbl, this message will be rejected.

Shortly after, you will get an email back from a different host at crynwr.com saying what the SMTP conversation looked like, for example (here is one of mine):

I connected to 195.166.97.84 and here's the conversation I had:

250 libra.ldv.co.uk Hello sbl.crynwr.com ([192.203.178.107]), pleased to meet you
mail from:<>
554 LDV has rejected your email because the host which attempted to deliver it, 192.203.178.107, is listed in the block list at sbl.spamhaus.org. Please see http://ldv.com/spam for more information.

Terminating conversation

Red text above is your host (a) talking.

The 554 message you see above is my own custom one in "Custom SMTP error response for rejected messages:" - bottom field of the section "DNS blacklist filters" in your server configuration.

This useful service is brought to you by the kind folks at crynwr.com and the Spamhaus project, none of whom I have ever met and all of whom I owe an enormous debt of gratitude.

I doubt they read this forum, but if they do, thanks for keeping my business email system largely spam free!
