RE: Strange SMTP log message, what does it mean?

Domino Server All Releases Linux - RedHat

Here's my 2c

Problem 1
10/10/2002 08:53:52 AM [28957:00007-04101] SMTPClient: Attempting to Connect: Host mail.AIRCANADA.CA, Port 465, SSL Port 0, Connecting Domain tnky.ca
10/10/2002 08:54:12 AM [28957:00007-04101] SMTPClient: Connection terminated with status: 2055
10/10/2002 08:54:12 AM Router: No messages transferred to AIRCANADA.CA (host mail.AIRCANADA.CA) via SMTP: The server is not responding. The server may be down or you may be experiencing network problems. Contact your system administrator if this problem persists.

As the message says, server not responding. The only oddity is the time differencee is somewhat small ~20 seconds. This might be a flaky IP connection though.

Problem 2
10/10/2002 08:54:15 AM [28957:00007-04101] SMTPClient: ReceiveResponse: 220-****************************************0**2**200**22****00*2********
10/10/2002 08:54:15 AM [28957:00007-04101] SMTPClient: ReceiveResponse: 220 ******************************************************************************200***

This is just a very funky initial greeting. Usually SMTP servers greet you with
"220 server.domain.org running SMTP ver 1.2.3"
This one responded with a multiline
220-****************************************0**2**200**22****00*2********
220 ******************************************************************************200***

The only thing SMTP software cares about is the '220' The rest is arbitary text for humans. (Or prehaps aliens in this case).
Maybe a bug on the remote system, maybe a mis-configuration, mabe a loopy sys admin. who knows. Not a problem

Problem 3
10/10/2002 08:54:15 AM [28957:00007-04101] SMTPClient: CommandEHLO: EHLO tnky.ca
10/10/2002 08:54:15 AM [28957:00007-04101] SMTPClient: ReceiveResponse: 500 5.5.1 Unknown command "XXXX tnky.ca" specified

ESMTP SMTP clients attempt to establish an ESMTP session by saying EHLO. If the reciving SMTP server doesn't support ESMTP then it will respond with a '500' message. Again, the number is important, the text is arbitrary.
The sending system will then fall back to the regular SMTP command HELO, which in this case is sucessful.
10/10/2002 08:54:15 AM [28957:00007-04101] SMTPClient: CommandHELO: HELO tnky.ca
10/10/2002 08:54:16 AM [28957:00007-04101] SMTPClient: ReceiveResponse: 250 mail.aircanada.ca OK, yulmta1 [10.10.20.23].

So, there is really only one problem, that is the dropped connection at the start. If you are seeing lots of this to multiple destinations, then yu might need to start troubleshooting your IP connections to the Internet. If its just one destination, then it might be their problem.
The other log entries are problems, just oddities.
