Domino Server All Releases All Platforms

The upgrade redbook has me baffled.

It seems to imply that prior to upgrading we should make a copy of our customized R5 pubnames.ntf (in order to change its Replica ID), give it a new filename (let's say ourpubnames.ntf) and Template Name (in DB properties), and also set our R5 Domino Directory (names.nsf) to inherit from this custom template.

Then we run the upgrade which, unless I'm not firing on all cylinders today, means that the R5 pubnames.ntf will be replaced with the new ND6 pubnames.ntf.

We are then, according to the redbook, supposed to rename "ourpubnames.ntf" back to "pubnames.ntf".

Er, excuse me?

1. The redbook doesn't say what we should do with the ND6 pubnames.ntf. In order to even be able to rename "ourpubnames.ntf" to "pubnames.ntf" , we would either need to delete or rename it since you can't have two files with the same filename in the same folder.

2. This would leave us with an upgraded server and an R5 version of the Domino Directory. We would apparently lose the ND6 pubnames.ntf template in this process.

Therefore, I can only conclude that the information in Chapter 5 of the redbook is either patently wrong or so poorly written as to be unintelligible.

What's an admin to do?

At this point, I'm thinking I'll just make a copy of my R5 names.nsf database (design only), run the upgrade without messing with the pubnames.ntf template, upgrade names.nsf to the ND6 template, and then copy and paste the handful of agents I need from the old db to the new template.

This whole business of playing a shell game with the templates is baffling.
