RE: iSeries Vs Windows Platform ~Vanessa Bregerogenakoi 9.Oct.03 02:21 PM a Web browser Domino Server All ReleasesAll Platforms
I went the other direction (from NT 4.0 to OS/400), and found distinct advantages in stability, security, and performance.
We ran Domino on NT for about 4 months and documented 17 software-related crashes; in the two and a half years since migrating to iSeries, we've documented three (all related to a sketchy JVM). I don't have to worry about myriad Windows or IIS holes, or about having to patch and reboot every month. And my server is much less likely to get bogged down under heavy load.
It's true that Windows' GUI is easier to use than the OS/400 CLI. However, I rarely have to use the CLI (usually just to check backup status), since I can perform most tasks through the Administrator client; on those occasions where I have to use the CLI I can always find helpful references online. And a CLI is less resource-intensive than a GUI, on any platform.
YMMV, of course, but if any of my higher-ups ever suggested moving from iSeries to a Windows platform I'd give them an odd look and privately question their sanity.
