RE: iSeries Vs Windows Platform ~Bella Kiresatherjip 9.Oct.03 03:23 PM a Web browser Domino Server All ReleasesAll Platforms
I've done migrations from Windows to the iSeries but never the other direction. The iSeries is more secure, more reliable, more scalable. That uptime translates into avoiding the costs of having your Domino applications and email unavailable. Since you can consolidate so many servers onto a single iSeries, you save on things like electricity, data center air conditioning requirements, UPS modules, backup media, software licenses, and just plain old square footage. Most importantly, you avoid huge manpower costs because you don't need server admins babysitting the iSeries.
Will you ever want to add a development Domino server, or a test box? You can add it to the iSeries without additional Domino licenses or their annual maintenance fees.
At first glance, Windows servers seem cheap compared to an iSeries upgrade. You can get a Dell server for $399, right? But when you add up everthing you need, they are really not so cheap:
( ) High-end Wintel hardware, including multiple processors and a couple GB of memory.
( ) Raid controller and extra SCSI drives.
( ) Fast tape drive for backups.
( ) Windows server license.
( ) Domino licenses per processor.
( ) Backup software license.
( ) Antivirus software license.
( ) Another UPS.
( ) Additional backup tapes.
Now add up the residual costs:
( ) Windows Administrator time during initial migration.
( ) Windows Administrator time for weekly Windows updates.
( ) Windows Administrator time to recover from inevitable virus attacks.
( ) Cost to the business when Domino is unavailable during during all of the above.
( ) The annual maintenance costs on the extra software licenses.
I have customers who don't have an iSeries and they pay dearly to support the Windows platform. It works great but it is a more convoluted environment and the residual costs are greater. I have one customer who has Domino on the iSeries and Domino on Windows. He needs another Domino server for development/testing. He could throw it on the iSeries at no additional cost -- except he needs a little more DASD. Unfortunately, he blew his budget on the so-called "cheap" Windows platform and now has to wait for new funds in order to get his iSeries DASD. The Windows server is recognized as a waste of precious funds.
