Richard:
The micro-browser issues you have will be found in virtually all handheld devices, so it's not JUST the Tungsten.
I think you'll find it does a far better job when aimed at site built for micro-browsers (various WAP or cHTML sites). For instance, try wireless.nwa.com (Northwest Airlines). The "real" site looks horrendous on a small screen; the wireless site works great.
One of the REAL issues you may be facing is coverage. The Tungsten W uses the GPRS systems (right?), and sometimes coverage is spotty. I'm in the Detroit area where things are pretty solid, but I get in trouble quickly when I leave the metro area very far ...
