RE: REVISED: Where is Domino going? ~Hank Nimtumiplop 1.Oct.02 08:20 PM a Web browser General All ReleasesAll Platforms
Your concerns are on target. The future of Domino is murky at best. Disregard the angry responses that don't talk to the issue. It is out of fear that they are angry. Fear for their livelihood. I have been to that well and drank. Years ago the future of Domino (even when it was simply Notes) was unclear. Today it is clear that years ago when people were concerned, the concerns were well founded.
Sure the reasons you listed today are valid. Along with dozens of others you have not listed.
And sure enough the product has diminished in strength. The number of "seats" that the marketing machine stands behind is just not reflective of its production application use. The bottom line is that more and more companies are migrating critical applications away from Domino or opting for new development on other platforms.
Hey I love Domino and am mourning at its slow death. Its great RAD, plugs into many areas of business as a solution, and allows for true "outside the box" thinking.
IBM's unclear direction of late is only another nail in the coffin. It is not the sole application killer. There are many contributors to that, of equal fault.
Regardless of the horn blowing here, the industry tells the true tale of what is happening with Domino. Just pick up your daily newspaper, visit monster.com, and talk with others in the industry. The true bottom line is that jobs reflect technology usage. And there are simply no Domino jobs (now for those "literals" - when I say "No" I mean no real quantity). I understand we are in a bad economy and technology jobs have 50 people applying for a single position, but there are still simply no Domino jobs out there.
Don't get me wrong. I have a job. A good job. Great money. I am on a project that has near term (2 years) commitment. So for now I am safe. But at the end of that. Maybe in 3 years. It will be another story.
You want to pick some technology that will be around for a long long time. With clear industry commitment, backing, and direction? Try these on for size:
Sun Java
C++
Oracle
Get those under your belt with some real experience and you will never find yourself in a forum like this questioning your future again.
Was this constructive? Heck no. But honestly, any technical reason I give or "objective" solution for IBM to consider, is only a regurgitation of something is listed about 100 other times in this forum. They don't need little ol' me to tell them how to fix the problem. If they have not done it by now, chances are it won't be done at all, or simply a "dollar short and a day late".
Good luck to all.
(and to those that are ready to pounce - I look forward to the flurry of responses - there are plenty of grammar errors, misspellings, and generalizations in this response to feed on for a while).
