RE: Some general comments from Lotus. ~Dean Brefanaman 1.Oct.02 10:41 PM a Web browser General All ReleasesAll Platforms
I appreciate your response! First, let me say that we are negotiating with IBM now to host a 'remote site' launch here in Baton Rouge, so, yes, you will 'see' me at one.
You raise excellent points. I reviewed the beta, and found many if not all of my concerns very adequately reflected by other people. (more on this below.)
The bigger issue is that IBM appears to be involved in a long-term effort to 'harmonize' it's product line. This is a valid thing for IBM to be doing. DB2 for data storage, WebSphere for high performance & adaptable web apps/services, Tivoli for management, and Lotus for Collaboration.
As a techie with a Marketing/Business degree, I think that it's something that IBM has to do in order to present a clear marketing and direction message to large clients. The reason that I see an issue with this in my Notes/Domino developer role is that the 'classic Notes/Domino' doesn't fit this model. It can do most, if not all of the DB2, WebSphere and Lotus roles mentioned above.
This puts the Notes/Domino that we're used to in conflict with the clear organizational direction IBM is taking.
And I don't think any amount of Beta comments would change that, or the impact that this conflict will have on what Domino becomes.
Let me clear about this: R6, er, v6, er ,Domino 6 is an excellent product that appears very solid and reliable. And we will use it, resell it, support it, and enjoy it.
But it doesn't change the long term direction that the roadmap lays out. There's a reason that Next Gen enters the highway from the WebSphere side on the 'roadmap to the future' graphic.
It will be very hard to sell WebSphere into SMB accounts, which is what we have here, mostly. It's a hard enough sell explaining what Notes/Domino is in the current release, much less explaining what it will become as it moves down the roadmap.
