When this was giving me trouble, I had forgotten to add the new client rev to the 'If Running This Version of Notes' list on my Desktop Settings. I could see the client opening the expected session on the server, but since there was no match for the current client release in the desktop policy doc, there was no reason for my client to display the upgrade prompt. Once I added the new version string, SMU started working as expected.
