No matter how you stack it, Mac hardware is still too expensive. I won't even touch a Mac until they move to a much more inexpensive platform. Unless your a graphics designer or a publisher, a Mac is a waste of money. Even at that you can still get almost all the software they use for Windows. But to get the same results you have to have about as expensive as most mid range Mac.
You do have a point about Linux is cheaper. To be honest most of what I have seen on the Mac, I have been impressed. I have always hated apple's closed architecture on their hardware. To answer your question. Most of the time when I see market share percentages, Macs tend to keep steady with its niche market. Linux has made a few gains, although it may be extremely small. The most recent figures I saw that Linux is gain on the Mac as per percentage in market share. If I can find a recent article I'll post it.
