I've heard that using the 1.4 SDK in the current product has some unintended consequences, and hence does not work. I've also been told by the provider of the bolt-on tool I'm using that any 1.3 JVM is sufficient, so long as the JSSE API is available. The project killer is the "unsupported" tag - management doesn't like that term, and works diligently to keep the techies from driving solutions that bear it.
I suppose a couple of beer cans and some 50lb- test line would work, too, if I could figure out a good encryption scheme and a way to support it.
