While I agree with you that IBM has --not-- done a wonderful job explaining itself, it is also appropriate to look at this from IBM's viewpoint. IBM isn't going to layout its long term plan for you ---- and therefore its competition --- to see.
This is a very delicate issue that affects a lot of BPs, customers, and IBM's competition. Playing the hand close to their chest is the only right way to do it. It also may be surprising to hear that there are many bizarre opinions on this issue with everyone worried about opposite things.
For example, my customer was told two years ago by IBM Consultants - yes IBM Consultants - that Domino isn't for web deveopment!! - Websphere is!!! [And we're worried about Microsoft!] So, the customer tried that route. But, it turns out that Domino web apps are built much faster than Websphere web apps and the customer's business areas aren't that concerned with what puts it on the web, just as long as it gets there.
With that new found knowledge they now are looking at an integrated model. For them integration is a wonderful future - and they are -very- concerned that it might -not- happen. A reverse concern of yours!!!! Bizarre!!! Another example of IBM's lack of communication.
Bottom Line: IBM will get its customers to where they need to be and at the right time and with the right tools.
For developers, this is much tougher. As developers we need to face facts - Websphere is the big ticket guy now. Domino will be there, but that's not where you are going to make the --good-- money. To maintain viability, Domino developers will need to learn Websphere. But, Websphere guys will --not-- need to learn Domino. That tells me all I need to know.
