You say "In one word: if Domino wants to keep up, it needs much stronger ties to jakarta.apache.org, xml.apache.org, Websphere, Eclipse, etc." but I think you think IBM is turning Domino into J2EE, which they are not. Websphere is their entry in this market, and appears to be a good one, while Domino is intended to serve different purposes. The goal from the roadmap is that the two be integrated better, so that collaboration in Websphere is easier, and transaction processing in Domino is easier. This is not going to be accomplished by making them the same but rather by making them complimentary and intregrating certain key parts. It is possible that Domino components will ride on a Websphere layer at some point, but just like a PDF or other plugin does not need to "become the browser", the Domino lyer does not need to "become Websphere".
