When moving a Domino Server to a new directory location on new hardware, there are several settings in the notes.ini file and Domino Directory that may require updating.

1) Anything referencing the previous Domino Program Directory or the previous Domino Data Directory should automatically get updated when you run the Domino Installer on the new server. For example:

  • Old Program Directory c:\notes
    Old Data Directory c:\notefile

Run the Domino Installer and specify:

  • New Program Directory d:\notes
    New Data Directory d:\notefile

In the notes.ini file:

  • NotesProgram=c:\notes
    Directory=c:\notefile

The notes.ini file will be updated by the Domino Installer to now be:

  • NotesProgram=d:\notes
    Directory=d:\notefile

2) If you keep the Domino Server ID in a location other than the Domino Data Directory, be sure its new location is updated in the notes.ini file. For example:

  • Server ID was located on c:\bin\tools\server.id
    Server ID now located on d:\bin\tools\server.id

In the notes.ini file:

  • ServerKeyfilename=c:\bin\tools\server.id

Edit this line to point to new location

  • ServerKeyfilename=d:\bin\tools\server.id

3) Changes need to be made in the notes.ini file if the location of the Domino Server Transactional logs has changed. For example:

  • Old Location of Transactional logs: F:\logdir
    New Location of Transactional logs: G:\logdir

Make the following changes in the notes.ini file:

  • TRANSLOG_Path=F:\logdir
    Previous_TRANSLOG_Path=F:\logdir\

Edit those lines to point to the new location:

  • TRANSLOG_Path=G:\logdir
    Previous_TRANSLOG_Path=F:\logdir\

In addition, the Domino administrator should edit Transaction Logging tab of the Domino Server Record on the Admin Server of the Domino Directory:

4) If the base path of the DAOS store is changing, for example:

  • Old base path of DAOS store f:\daos
    New base path of DAOS store g:\daos

In the notes.ini file:

  • DAOSBasePath=f:\daos

needs to be edited to point to new location

  • DAOSBasePath=g:\daos

In addition, the Domino administrator should edit DAOS tab of the Domino Server Record on the Admin Server of the Domino Directory:

5) Replicate the Domino Directory changes from your Admin Server to the new hardware:

  • From Command Prompt, type d:\notes> neplica.exe AdminServerOfDominoDirectory names.nsf

6) If you have DAOS enabled you should resync your DAOS catalog:

  • From Command Prompt, type d:\notes> ndaosmgr.exe resync

7) Check the notes.ini file for any other settings that might require updating. Search for the platform-specific path delimiters: "\" on Windows and "/" in UNIX and make any other appropriate updates. For example, you may have set any one of the following:

  • VIEW_REBUILD_DIR=c:\view_rebuild_dir\
    DEBUG_OUTFILE=c:\tmp\notes.log

8) Start the Domino Server and study the console on the screen or in the console log or in log.nsf and see if there were any settings you might have missed that require updating.
